We have been serving Clevelanders and tourists coming to
Cleveland since~1964. Did you know?.... Cleveland holds the
largest number of Hungarians outside of the Karpathyan basin.
About Us,
Our Founder in 1959 opened Theresa's Diner, a carry out and
"Singles Diner" in the old Hungarian quarters on Buckeye Road.
In 1964 moved a few blocks and named it Balaton Restaurant.
In 1997 we moved Balaton to Shaker Square, built-out the once
Bunce Brothers' corner and reopened there in 1998. After covid,
We were forced to look for another home again and packed up.
Moved our equipment to storage in January 2022, and begun our
search and securing our new base, build-out and resettle again.
Reopened February 2023, and we are ready to please your taste.
It was in Cleveland, anno 1959 Balaton restaurant begun. Bacame famous during the 60-s and 70-s for it's superb Wiener Schnitzel and a variance of that, the Chicken Schnitzel. Other fine offerings on the menu include: Stuffed Cabbages, Goulashes, and the Hungarian Lecso, a yellow paprika and tomato based summer stew, and of course Chicken Paprikash, and Veal Paprikash.
After Dinner, if One finds room for it, completed with a delightful dessert, not too sweet,... just right.... the home made Blincess, or Crepe Suzette, or Palacsinta with apricot, walnut, sweet cottage cheese, or poppy seed fillings. The strudels, the Dobosh Torta, Eszterházy Walnut Cake, and other delights, making dinner complete, also made in house.
For those of legal age, we are bringing simply good wine from the gentle hills of Lake Balaton region. Those having a taste for wine with hardier character, we have some for you from the Northern regions of Hungary. *Also our selection of California and other wine of the World, as well as Continental and International beer.
